The Foundation for Healthy Floridians

Funded by the generous donations of physicians, corporations and other benefactors, the Foundation for Healthy Floridians is the FMA's philanthropic vehicle for supporting physician leadership training, medical education, public health, and physician health. Our mission includes:

  • Providing education and mentorship opportunities for Florida's medical students, residents and young physicians
  • Supporting the Karl M. Altenburger, M.D. Physician Leadership Academy, which helps doctors hone the skills they need to become leaders within the medical profession and effect change in healthcare
  • Providing support to physicians so they can deliver badly-needed medical services in areas that have been devastated by natural disasters.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and all donations are tax-deductible. Thank you for your contribution.

Leadership Academy

Karl M. Altenburger, MD Physician Leadership Academy

Exclusively for FMA members, the Karl M. Altenburger, MD Physician Leadership Academy is an intensive, 10-month program that helps emerging physician leaders develop specific non-clinical skills they need to be effective advocates for the medical profession and their patients: emotional intelligence, conflict management, strategic leadership, persuasive communication, and building a healthy workplace culture.

Generously funded by the Physicians Foundation, Professionals Resource Network, and the FMA's Foundation for Healthy Floridians, the Academy combines daylong, in-person sessions with virtual learning activities throughout the year.

Medical Disaster Relief Grant applications

As hurricane recovery efforts continue in Southwest Florida and other impacted communities across the state, the FMA is mobilizing to help physicians in need.

Our Foundation for Healthy Floridians has established a medical disaster relief fund and is accepting Medical Disaster Relief grant applications from physicians whose practices were severely damaged or forced to temporarily close because of Hurricane Ian. All funds will go toward helping physicians reopen their practice to continue to provide care to their patients. The application deadline was January 20, 2023 and the Foundation is reviewing all applications and will respond to each applicant..

The Foundation gives special thanks to the AMA Foundation for their generous support of the Medical Disaster Relief Fund.

Help physicians heal their communities

Hurricane Ian unleashed destruction and catastrophic flooding across the state, leaving millions of Floridians displaced and without power. Many medical practices, particularly in areas of southwest Florida that were hardest hit, are severely damaged and unable to provide patient care. Others will be closed for extended times or forced to relocate. You can help hurricane-stricken practices recover and reopen by supporting the Foundation for Healthy Floridians Medical Disaster Relief Fund.

The Medical Disaster Relief Fund was established in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina to:

  • Help physician practices recover after natural disasters
  • Support physicians so that they can provide urgently needed medical services in communities wrecked by natural disasters

Your contribution to the Medical Disaster Relief Fund will allow physician practices to rebuild, reopen and heal their communities. Thank you for your generous support.
