The American Medical Association designated obesity as a disease in 2013; however, significant stigma persists, and obesity is often viewed and treated differently from other widely accepted chronic diseases. The introduction of GLP-1 receptor agonists has marked a transformative shift in obesity management. This presentation will review the diagnosis and treatment of obesity and weight-related conditions before and after the GLP-1 era.

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the goals and core principles of obesity medicine
  • Explain the clinical rationale for the use of anti-obesity medications
  • Apply current evidence to navigate the evolving weight-management landscape and better support patients

Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions using the questions pane for the Q&A session at the end of the webinar.

About The Presenter

Aparna Chandra, MD
Medical Director, Jersey Medical Weight Loss Center

Dr. Aparna Chandra is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine. She is the Founder and Medical Director of Jersey Medical Weight Loss Center, which first opened in New Jersey in 2012 and expanded with a second office in Tampa, FL, in 2024.

She is a Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA), where she also serves as a committee member, and an associate editor of its publication, The Obesity Pillars. She is an active member of the Obesity Action Coalition. Her expertise has been widely published in newspapers, health magazines, and medical websites. Under her direction, the center has been a multi-year "Obesity Care Week Champion" for its extensive advocacy and awareness efforts through radio, social media, and other channels. Additionally, Dr. Chandra is a nationally recognized speaker and mentor to physicians across the U.S. in Obesity Medicine.

Dr. Chandra's clinical focus includes adult/ adolescent obesity medicine, genetic disorders of obesity, diabetes, and the use of anti-obesity medications.

The FMA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

  1. Event reminder emails will be sent from Florida Medical Association (customercare@gotowebinar.com), which will include a JOIN WEBINAR link, one week, one day, and one hour before the event begins.

OR

  1. Go to www.flmedical.org. At the top of the page, click on Profile. Sign in with your username (email) and password.
  2. Under the Profile Menu header, locate the blue section containing profile options. Click the orange Event Access/Claim CME tab. (example shown above)
  3. Click the Access Webinar link listed next to the webinar title.
  4. Slides and/or supporting documents will be provided in the handouts section of the webinar, if available.

Post-Event:

  1. Go to www.flmedical.org. At the top of the page, click on Profile. Sign in with your username (email) and password.
  2. Under the Profile Menu header, locate the blue section containing profile options. Click the orange Event Access/Claim CME tab. (example shown above)
  3. Access to the recording will be available after review and then in the members-only webinar library.
  4. Course Handouts link for slides and/or supporting documents will be listed next to the event, if available.

Claiming CME Credit:

  1. Log in to your FMA account profile and click the Event Access/Claim CME tab in the blue menu. (example shown above)
  2. Click the event's Claim CME Credit hyperlink.
  3. All CME credits will be reported daily on your behalf to CE Broker.
  4. CME Certificates will be available to print in your FMA Profile after credits have been reported. Certificates will no longer be mailed.
Directions For Initial Registration
Directions for initial registration:
  1. Sign In (you may already be signed in if you clicked a link from an FMA email)
  2. Click the green Register Myself button below
  3. Click the blue Add button next to the CME or event item(s) to include in your registration 
  4. Click the green Proceed to Checkout button (bottom of page) and finalize your purchase on the next page by clicking the green Submit Order button
  5. You will receive an order confirmation email after successfully completing check out.
