Stephen J. Bekanich, MD, is vice president of growth for Aledade, the largest network of independent physicians in the U.S. Prior to joining Aledade, he co-founded and served as chief medical officer of Iris Healthcare (acquired by Aledade), a disease-specific advance care planning service. Dr. Bekanich also served as CEO of Ascension Health’s Texas ACO with 3,000 physicians and as chief medical officer of the health insurance joint venture between Cigna and Ascension Health. Before moving to Austin, Texas, he held the rank of associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the University of Utah’s Medical Center, where he started and directed the center’s palliative medicine programs. Dr. Bekanich’s research focuses on communication and pain, and he has received awards for medical leadership, innovation in health care, teaching, and patient and family satisfaction.
