Integrated Pain Management in Outpatient Settings (CME)
Balancing pain management and opioid use and abuse appropriately is a significant problem in the United States and in Florida. The failure to manage pain effectively, along with the possible complication of opioid dependence related to treatment, can result in significant morbidity and mortality. It is critical that providers have a firm grasp on the management of patients with acute, subacute and chronic pain.  To be successful, clinicians must understand appropriate opioid prescribing, assessment, the potential for abuse and addiction, and potential psychological problems. Inappropriate opioid prescribing typically involves not prescribing, under prescribing, overprescribing, or continuing to prescribe opioids when they are no longer effective. Overall, the approach to opioid prescribing has shifted significantly in recent years and it is imperative that prescribers stay up-to-date on current best practices and regulations. This webinar, jointly provided by the PDMP Foundation and the Florida Medical Association, is being offered to ensure that prescribers in Florida are using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to make safer and more effective pain management decisions, including knowing when opioids are appropriate, how to determine safe dosages, and when to consider alternative pain management strategies. The goal is to equip clinicians with strategies and tools to support and improve their prescribing practices.

This webinar, jointly provided by the PDMP Foundation and the Florida Medical Association, is being offered to ensure that prescribers in Florida are using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to make safer and more effective pain management decisions, including knowing when opioids are appropriate, how to determine safe dosages, and when to consider alternative pain management strategies. The goal is to equip clinicians with strategies and tools to support and improve their prescribing practices.  

This webinar is jointly provided by the Florida Medical Association and the FL PDMP Foundation for 1.5 CME credits.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
  • Incorporate current practice guidelines for substance use disorder (SUD), opioid use disorder (OUD), and stimulant use disorder (StUD)
  • Implement key principles of effective screening for SUDs
  • Identify and utilize validated screening tools for SUDs and related risk factors, including mental disorders
  • Examine socioeconomic disparities in the treatment of SUDs
  • Evaluate methods to reduce stigma toward those seeking services and treatment for SUD
  • Create comprehensive treatment plans for patients with pain that address both pain management and drug diversion prevention
  • Utilize patient and family education on safety and overdose prevention (including diversion control, safe storage, and use of naloxone)
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to facilitate access to medications and referrals to services like case management

About The Presenter

Marc Kaprow, DO, MPH

Marc G. Kaprow, DO, MHA, MACOI has over 20 years of experience in clinical and administrative medicine within his specialty areas of Internal Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Leadership within Healthcare Administration. His specific areas of interest include care and management of complex persons and populations, healthcare quality, and healthcare policy.

Dr. Kaprow has served as the President of the Broward County Osteopathic Medical Association, and the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association. He continues to volunteer time within the Osteopathic profession at the local, state and national levels, serving on a variety of committees, as well as the AOA House of Delegates. He is a national Health Policy Fellow for the American Osteopathic Association, a Master Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and volunteers locally in his children’s schools, his local synagogue, and at Shepherd’s Hope, a central Florida clinic providing essential healthcare services to uninsured patients. Dr. Kaprow holds faculty appointments at Nova Southeastern University, the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine, and at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. He serves as a peer reviewer for the AMA Journal of Ethics.
