Older Drivers in Florida: Enduring Safety and Medical Fitness
The FMA is pleased to partner with the FSU College of Medicine's Department of Geriatrics through their HRSA-funded GWEP grant, known as FSU REACH, to provide this webinar.
As Florida continues to lead the nation in the proportion of older drivers, physicians play a vital role in assessing and promoting safe mobility for aging adults. This CME activity is designed to equip physicians with evidence-based guidance on evaluating and managing older drivers. Participants will learn how age-related changes in vision, cognition, mobility, medical conditions, and medications can impact driving ability, and how to apply practical screening tools and clinical strategies in everyday practice. The course emphasizes person-centered communication, risk stratification, and state resources (like the Florida Dept. of Transportation and Claude Pepper Center Safe Mobility for Life Coalition) to support safe driving alternatives when needed.
By the end of this activity, clinicians will be better prepared to balance patient autonomy with public safety, comply with Florida’s reporting and licensing guidelines, and enhance quality of life for older adults through thoughtful mobility planning.
- Identify 3 areas of medical risk & red flags related to driving disability for older drivers
- Describe how to use the Plan for Older Drivers’ Safety (PODS) and its assessment tools in the clinical setting
- Identify 3 potential risk reduction interventions for older drivers
- Identify resources for assessment, intervention, counseling and mobility planning for older drivers
- Discuss the ethical and legal issues involved in reporting unsafe drivers in Florida
Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions using the questions pane for the Q&A session at the end of the webinar.
