Integrated Pain Management: Evidence-based Therapies (CME)
The approach to opioid prescribing has shifted significantly in recent years due to the opioid epidemic. It is imperative that prescribers stay up-to-date on current best practices and regulations. This CME webinar is being offered to ensure that prescribers in Florida are using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to make safer and more effective pain management decisions, including knowing when opioids are appropriate, how to determine safe dosages, and when to consider alternative pain management strategies.

Integrating SUD Screening & Diagnosis into Your Practice Restream

This webinar is jointly provided by the Florida Medical Association, Florida Psychiatric Society, E-FORCSE®, and FL PDMP Foundation for 1.5 CME credits.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
  • Incorporate current practice guidelines for substance use disorder (SUD), opioid use disorder (OUD), and stimulant use disorder (StUD)
  • Implement key principles of effective screening for SUDs
  • Identify and utilize validated screening tools for SUDs and related risk factors, including mental disorders
  • Examine socioeconomic disparities in the treatment of SUDs
  • Evaluate methods to reduce stigma toward those seeking services and treatment for SUD
  • Create comprehensive treatment plans for patients with pain that address both pain management and drug diversion prevention
  • Utilize patient and family education on safety and overdose prevention (including diversion control, safe storage, and use of naloxone)
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to facilitate access to medications and referrals to services like case management

The webinar is free for all registrants, and participants will have access to the recording through their FMA online account until Sunday, December 7.

About The Presenter

DEBRA M. BARNETT, MD, DLFAPA

Dr. Barnett attended medical school at University of South Alabama and completed psychiatric training at University of South Florida.  After obtaining board certification in General Psychiatry, she obtained board certifications in Geriatric, Addiction, and Forensic Psychiatry.  She achieved the APA designation of Distinguished Life Fellow.  The Florida Psychiatric Society has awarded her with Practitioner of the Year and she continues to be active with FPS.  She has served as Chair of the Addiction Psychiatry Committee, Secretary, President, and is the Chair of the Legislative Committee.  She has been the FPS representative to the local Medicare carrier’s Contractor Advisory Committee, delegate to the FMA, and is one of the Representatives to the APA Assembly, where she has authored numerous Action Papers.

Post-Event:

This CME webinar is being offered to ensure that prescribers in Florida are using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to make safer and more effective pain management decisions, including knowing when opioids are appropriate, how to determine safe dosages, and when to consider alternative pain management strategies. After completing this training program, learners should be able to: 1. Explain the fundamental concepts of pain management, including definitions, etiology and mechanisms 2. Recognize the complexities of assessing pain, including risk factors for opioid misuse and addiction 3. Explain principles of appropriate opioid prescribing for pain, including initiation, titration, tapering, and discontinuation 4. Develop individualized pain treatment plans that incorporate therapeutic goals, pharmacologic options (including opioid-sparing approaches), and non-pharmacologic options 5. Implement strategies for the safe use of opioid therapy, including counseling patients and caregivers on safe use, storage, and disposal. 6. Recognize when referral to a pain specialist or other appropriate healthcare professional is necessary.
