Assessing Medical Capacity and Initiating the Baker Act
This CME webinar is designed to help healthcare professional better understand the complexities of the Baker Act and medical decision-making capacity in clinical practice. In addition to a didactic exchange, this course will provide real-world case studies to illustrate the application of capacity assessment, as well as an interactive question and answer session. 

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Define capacity and highlight the basic elements of capacity
  • Recognize the basic ethical and legal considerations to be aware of when assessing capacity 
  • Explain the purpose of the Baker Act and how it differs from the Marchman Act
  • Grasp the basic criteria for initiating a Baker Act 

Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions using the questions pane for the Q&A session at the end of the webinar.


About The Presenter

Ryan C. Hall, MD, Forensic Psychiatrist 
Secretary, FMA Board of Governors 

Dr. Ryan C. W. Hall graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors with a double major in biology and psychology from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his medical training at Georgetown University School of Medicine and did an internal medicine internship at Johns Hopkins University. He completed his psychiatric residency in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins and a forensic psychiatry fellowship at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

Dr. Hall is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, as well as a member of the Florida Psychiatric Society, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, the American Medical Association, The American College of Psychiatrists, and the Physicians Society of Central Florida. He is a Diplomate for the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute. He currently serves on the Psychopharmacology, Research, and Rappeport Fellowship Committees of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, as well as serving on the CME, Forensic Psychiatry, and Ethics Committees for Florida Psychiatric Society. Dr. Hall currently serves as President for the Florida Psychiatric Society.

OR

  1. Go to www.flmedical.org. At the top of the page, click on Profile. Sign in with your username (email) and password.
  2. Under the Profile Menu header, locate the blue section containing profile options. Click the orange Event Access/Claim CME tab. (example shown above)
  3. Click the Access Webinar link listed next to the webinar title.
  4. Slides and/or supporting documents will be provided in the handouts section of the webinar, if available.

Post-Event:

  1. Go to www.flmedical.org. At the top of the page, click on Profile. Sign in with your username (email) and password.
  2. Under the Profile Menu header, locate the blue section containing profile options. Click the orange Event Access/Claim CME tab. (example shown above)
  3. Access to the recording will be available within 24 hours of the event conclusion until Sunday, November 9 and then in the members-only webinar library.
  4. Course Handouts link for slides and/or supporting documents will be listed next to the event, if available.

Claiming CME Credit:

  1. Log in to your FMA account profile and click the CME Event Access/Claim Credit tab in the blue menu (example shown above)
  2. Click the event's Claim CME Credit hyperlink
  3. All CME credits will be reported on your behalf to CE Broker by Friday, November 14 after the November 9 deadline.
  4. NEW FEATURE - CME Certificates will be available to print in your FMA Profile after credits have been reported. Certificates will no longer be mailed.
