Women in medicine: initiatives and upcoming events

FMA Staff Report

From Barely Surviving to Thriving, an FMA CME webinar coming up on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at noon ET, is one of several educational webinars that originated from the FMA’s Women in Medicine Committee.

“I’m so appreciative that the FMA Board of Governors (BOG) created a Women in Medicine Committee to support the needs of our women physician members,” said Rebekah Bernard, MD, an FMA BOG member who serves as committee chair. “Studies show that women physicians have a higher rate of burnout than our male colleagues, and of even greater concern, a 24-percent greater chance of suicide than the general population.”

Dr. Bernard said the FMA is committed to helping women physicians practice medicine through:

  • Offering education and resources geared toward the needs of women physicians. This includes previous CME webinars on topics including contract negotiation, conflict management, seeking help for burnout and wellness, and physician infertility. (Members can access the recordings for CME credit via the FMA Webinar Library.)
  • Encouraging and helping women in the FMA to participate fully in all aspects of organized medicine.
  • Providing networking opportunities.
  • Representing women physician members in FMA leadership.
